Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer US LLP

Fighting For The Public Good

Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer's dedication to fighting for the public good has been exemplified by some of the matters handled by the firm's US practice over the past year, including:

- sponsoring Legal Outreach, a college preparatory program to help New York City public school 9th graders experience life at a law firm. Freshfields engages the high school students in a mock-international joint venture that has them calling the Tokyo, Moscow, Paris and other offices on a due diligence hunt for clues. - advising Bidoun Projects, a charitable organization focused on promoting cultural coverage and education of arts and culture in the Middle East, on its recent conversion from a corporation to a not-for-profit organization, including the transfer of assets from its previous corporate entity to its current charitable entity (a 501(c)(3)).

- advised FINCA International, Inc., the Washington DC-based provider of microfinance services to the worlds lowest-income entrepreneurs, in its creation of FINCA Microfinance Holdings (FMH), a first-of-its-kind, socially responsible investment partnership with a strategically-selected group of international development banks and socially-responsible investment firms.

- providing contract advice to the Global Fund, an international financing institution which was created to raise and disburse funds to support large-scale prevention, treatment and care programs for HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria.

- providing contract advice to FilmAid International Inc., a nonprofit, charitable organization with a mission to use the power of film and media to transcend language and literacy, and bring life-saving information, psychological relief and much-needed hope to refugees and other communities in need around the globe.

- helping participants in the Iraqi Refugee Assistance Project (IRAP), which helps Iraqi refugees navigate the rules and process of resettlement in the U.S. file affirmative applications for resettlement, as well as to file requests for reconsideration where our clients have been denied resettlement in the United States.

- advising (RED), an organization which raises money to fight HIV/AIDS in sub-Saharan Africa, in completing the transfer of its assets to the ONE Campaign, a 501(c)(3) organization found by Bono, and in negotiating a series of new and renewed marketing/licensing arrangements. Freshfields acts as (RED)'s primary counsel.

Finally, like many residents and businesses located in the New York metro area, Freshfields was significantly affected by Superstorm Sandy. In the wake of the storm, Freshfields attorneys and staff donated nearly $50K to the American Red Cross, the Red Hook Initiative (providing on the ground relief in Brooklyn) and Yorkville Common Pantry, one of our community investment partners (providing meals to storm victims in the Rockaways and Staten Island).

The firm is also participating in the Legal Aid Society's Disaster Relief volunteer program, where attorneys and staff have been fielding calls and responding to questions on topics including food stamps, housing, subsistence benefits, and FEMA at the Society's Disaster Relief Hotline in Harlem and at outreach sites in Far Rockaway, Coney Island and Red Hook.
